Finnish mustard is kind of its own deal
Finnish mustard is kind of in a category all its own, as it’s often made with two ingredients not found in a lot of other mustards: cream and sugar. All in, the base of it is generally some combination of mustard powder, sugar, cream and cider vinegar, so the flavor is tangy and sweet, and often a bit spicy. And, the big Finnish brands that are easiest to find are Turin, Auran, and Kotisinappi. Here are some from those brands to add to your arsenal:
From Turan Mustard, there’s the Turan Mieto, their mild blend of mustard, and the Turan Vakeva, their strong variety.
Kotisinappi is not quite as easily found, but still findable. Try the Kotisinappi Traditional or the Kotisinappi Strong, (also available in 6-pack).
From Auran Mustard, you can try Auran Sinappi, their hot mustard, Auran Vakeva Sinappi, their very hot mustard, Auran Mieto Sinappi, the mild and fascinatingly green one, or the Auran Tulinen Sinappi black mustard. And, they offer, in slightly larger squeeze bottles, Auran Sot Chili, their (as the name might suggest) hot chili mustard, and Auran Makea Sinappi, their sweet mustard. Harder to find is the Auran Makeu Luomu, their organic sweet mustard, the extra hot Auran Tosi Tulinen, and their take on Dijon.
And, if you’re like, “yep, Finnish mustard people, take my money” Auran Mustard offers a variety pack of ten different flavors including sweet, hot, chili, mild, and just plain “strong.”
